Sherriff Murph', will be protecting all you whilst we're away. Giddy up!
Retired and loving it.

    Thank

the Lord (Oops, am I allowed to say that?) that I'll be off donating blood all of this next week. Going into the deep woods of the Adirondaks to do battle (by canoe) with black flies, no-see-ums and mosquitos the size of volkswagons!

My first outing in Scouting as the Scoutmaster - yikes :)

Gonna test the radiant cooling effects of large bodies of water(G). Water battles at high noon on the lakes. Super soakers at ten paddles!

Eagles, osprey and bears - oh my.

No phones, no pagers, no cell phones, no interruptions, no work - yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Sherrif Murph is in charge? I've seen how he drives. I'll takes me chances with the bears(G)!

    Be good,

    PAH

Hey!!!! You're coming to my part of the world. You better bring LOTS AND LOTS OF DEET. The little buggers are vicious this year. Ben's 100 is my favorite. Of course that will have no effect on the deer flies which will dive bomb you relentlessly for hours.

I heard that they carried a couple of campers away last week.

    Have fun!!!!

    Good grief!

Last I had heard, we were to leave at 6 AM. Get up extra early, arrive a bit before 6 & no one shows up! After waiting for a while - call fearless trip leader's home & guess what? Time changed to 8 AM!!! So a few minutes to kill(G).

I've met the blood sucking beasts and done battle with em before. I used to go to summer camp up this way and at the end of camp, my parents would pick us up for a week's trip on Forked Lake.

Fond memories like the night we watched a lunar eclipse from canoe, a mouse ran up Dad's pant leg as we sat around the campfire because a fox chased him and ran right through where we were sitting - Mr. Fox stopped dead in his tracks cause he suddenly realised he was surrounded by people & took off like greased lightening - then a great horned owl flew in chasing the very same mouse (Dad had shaken him out of his pant leg, rather quickly I might add), missed the little bugger and flew right into our clothes pole that was tied between two trees. Knocked himself silly for a few minutes, which gave us kids a chance to see him up close.

Another year we camped very close to a yellow jackets nest. Everything we ate or drank had bees stuck or drowned in it.

Mom liked to use the phrase "Open thy pearly gates" if we swore as she would take an ivory soap bar and scrape it across our front teeth. For some odd reason my older brothers took great delight in teaching me creative english, which resulted in more than one up close encounter with that dreaded bar! No matter how tightly you purse your lips, it doesn't help.

Another year & in an effort to be helpful, pull my oldest brother to shore while he's still in the canoe & it tips over. Not just once, but on several consecutive days - till he had no dry clothes. Little brothers always get even(G).

Saw a live mink playing in a public swimming area as it scampered over and around a floating platform.

It's been some 40 years since I've been on that lake & we cross it mid-week. We're traveling as follows:

Blue Mtn Lake to Utowana Lake

    Utowana to Forked Lake

    Forked to Raquette River

    Kelly Point to Racquett Falls

Racquette Falls to Stony Creek Ponds

52 miles afloat & another 20 or so hiking the hills!

Off to West Point today & overnight. Cruise up the Hudson tonight. Arrive Sabattis tomorrow, begin canoe adventure Monday.
