How do I get rid of diesel smell?

Vicki

Years ago my grandfather installed a diesel furnace oil filter in a large dirt hole in the basement. Everytime the filter was changed more and more diesel got spilled in the dirt. Under the thin layer of dirt is solid rock.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of the diesel smell?
I've tried vinegar, kitty litter, baking soda, plastic overit. Any HELP!

Utility Wonder Products Inc. makes a powder called Odor Kill. Other manufacturers also make similar products. They are available at real plumbing and mechanical supply houses,or you should be able to purchase some from your fuel oil supplier or burnerservice company

    Hi Vicki,
Take a 5 gal. bucket and fill w/ warm water add 1/2 bottle of any Dishwashing detergent( I find JOY works good )pour into hole once a week for one month and smell will go away.Doing this will break up oil and not just mask it for awhile. Good Luck

I just used some stuff called Oil Eater to clean out the residual sludge in my oil tank (prior to disposal), and it did a great job of killing the smell, which permeated the entire house. It's marketed for cleaning oil spots off your driveway (works great for that too). I bought it at a warehouse store, but I have seen it at auto stores.

    a product called Bio-Solve

will eat up the oil through enzymatic action..Can't remember the link off the top of my head right now..this stuff is used for contaminated tank graves, etc.
