the piping instructions in the install manual are, just like any code, the minimum acceptable specs. although excessive oversizing can be counterproductive.

one pipe steam
i am replacing an old coal boiler with a new gas weilmclain, is an equalizer necessary or just maintain pipe size on header.0 -
What does the install. manual say?
Follow the book to the T. I am SURE they would want one. With the lower water content boilers today it is CRITICAL to get the near boiler piping right. Good luck. kevin0 -
yes you would need
the equalizer pipe.it keeps the boiler pressure from pushing the boiler water out the return pipes hartford loop.which you will have to install, even if the old boiler had just a check valve.0 -
Yes you will need this Plus hartford loop Plus try to maintain 24" from block to system tie-in plus set-up so you can skim boiler before putting into service to avoid any problums this always works for me Good Luck0 -
I don't care what the manual says.....

That's true, MD
but I've never seen a manual that didn't require an equalizer.
I also like to make the header and equalizer one size larger than the manual calls for- especially on Vapor systems. The larger pipe size slows the steam down even more as it passes thru, giving any water that came up an even better chance to fall back to the boiler.

equalizer AND................
Don't forget the properly sized header and the proper # of risers from the boiler to the header AND the correct location of the header take off to the main(s), AND don't forget that all important "A" dimention. In some old coal jobs, the return was one of those mid height night mares for a new smaller, lower system. Watch that "A", or run the return on the floor if necessary.0 -
Equalizer AND..........
so I'm not a great speller, that has nothing to do w/boilers0
