Stuck Aquastat

Hi Folks. I had a service call today and while there the customer asked about checking the hot water temp…said it was VERY hot.

I checked the WH and sure enough the WH aquastst was bad. upon investigation the Hwell 4080B was stuck in the Superstor well. Any insights as to best ways to get this out? I tried kroil but no avail.

I didnt want to yank too hard lest I snap off the capillary tube.

Thanks.

I suppose if the aquastat is bad breaking off the capillary tube is not that big a deal.

You may have to replace the well also.

some of that heat transfer compound tends to glue the sensor into the well, the silver stuff is the worse

    Yank till it breaks.

If you’re a thrill-seeker, try drilling the center and collapse it

In your case, I'd yank it out. If/when it snaps, small drill in the center, then a little large, and large to you get close to the wall.

might be able to tap a drywall screw or small lag bolt in it and yank it out that way. don't break something more important trying to save the well.

So is the capillary tube filled w/ mercury?

no. usually some sort of refrigerant but it depends on what the temp range is what they use as the working fluid.
