Where Does Tire Pre-Cutting Fit in an Industrial TDF Process?
I have been reading about tire-derived fuel preparation and am trying to understand where pre-cutting actually adds value.
To be clear, I am not suggesting that waste tires should be burned in residential or ordinary commercial heating equipment. Tire-derived fuel belongs in properly engineered and permitted industrial combustion systems with suitable fuel handling, combustion controls and emissions management.
My question concerns the preparation side, before the material reaches such a facility.
A whole tire is awkward to handle. It can rotate or bridge above a shredder instead of entering the cutters steadily. Truck tires make the problem more noticeable because they are heavier, stronger and often close to the size limit of the feed opening.
One possible approach is to divide a tire into several sections before primary shredding. The smaller sections may be easier to load and present exposed edges that the shredder can grip. On the other hand, pre-cutting introduces another machine, another operator task and an additional maintenance point.
This makes me wonder whether the decision should be based on the complete handling cycle rather than the cutting time alone. A useful comparison would probably include:
- Time required to collect and position each tire
- Number of operator interventions at the shredder
- Actual tons accepted during a timed run
- Blade wear and maintenance time
- Energy used by both preparation stages
- Size consistency of the resulting tire chips
- Handling of bead wire and other exposed steel
I found this example of a tire cutting machine used before shredding while looking at different preparation arrangements. The equipment page explains the basic function, but it does not settle the larger process question: when does the extra preparation stage improve overall production, and when does it simply move the bottleneck?
Fuel specifications would presumably matter too. Cutting a tire into sections is not the same as producing finished TDF. The material still requires further size reduction and steel removal, followed by checks against the receiving facility’s fuel specification. A section that is easier for a shredder to handle is only intermediate feedstock.
For anyone familiar with permitted industrial solid-fuel systems or their upstream suppliers, is tire pre-cutting commonly specified by the fuel user, or is it mainly a decision made by the recycling plant? Have you seen whole-tire feeding work reliably enough that the extra cutting stage was unnecessary?
