heat load calc
Hi fellas. So after 10 years of being employed I decided to start my own business. I,m bidding a house in central NY. I ran my numbers through CoolCalc and my losses came out to 44,000 needed for cooling. 42,000 needed for heating. Theres a lot of windows but unless i screwed up, it seems like a lot of cooling needed. I did room by room, and I'd think the heat loss would be greater than the heat gain. Any advice ? its a 2 story 1300 square foot house on Cayuga Lake near Ithaca NY. Thank you guys.

Infiltration is the thing that can make your number go way off. How many air changes per hour are you including in the calculation? if it is a 100 year old barn, then 2 to 3 air changes per hour will may your system size almost 150% larger that the same size home built in the 2000's where all the insulation and weather sealing offers you less than 1/2 an air change per hour.

unless you have something very unusual happening there is a problem with the heat loss software you used or the information you gave it. in an area with an ~70 f degree heating delta and ~20 f degree cooling delta the heat loss and heat gain should not be nearly identical.

the heat loss seems plausible for a structure that size in that climate. The gain seems wildly oversized. maybe look for something that has made the solar gain calculations go crazy. does it itemize out how it got its numbers?

if it is new construction I would expect a 1300 sq ft home to be under 20 btu/ft. So more like 25-30,000 btu/ hr load
But if it is on the lake with big glass the load increase. Heating and cooling

Agree with you all so far. brand new home being built with spray foam and r 50 in the attic. fiberglass i think. Anyone use coolcalc? Or have a suggestion?

any suggestion for air exchange? I'd like to have one an hour, or run it off of carbon monoxide.

Tight construction like that will not get 1 change per hour. You will need to do that mechanically and I would do it with and HRV or ERV in order to get that number above 1 or more
