Flow control valves

Can you use spring check valves in place of a "standard" b & g flo control? Also is there any other options besides the B & G's?

Thank you in advance

usually unless the circulator is marginal, the weighted check has a bit less resistance than the spring check. the nice thing about most of the wighted check designs is they can be manually opened to purge and bleed the system.

taco, b&g, watts, and caleffi make flow check valves(caleffi look like they are only spring flow checks)

you can put a flow check in the flange of most newer circulators too

Caleffi had a spring check with a manual lever, operated with a knob. It was sold as a B&G product also. You can still find them around. Low Energy in Colorado shows them, also e-bay

The spring checks Caleffi sell now do not have the manual lever, same spring, .25 psi, 1-1/2 and larger is .50 psi.

The B&G iron FloChecks were .33 psi pop. I think they have been discontinued

Just to note , most control valves can be cleaned and put back in service .

There was an error rendering this rich post.

@hot_rod so then my 2nd question is. If the circulator on the supply has a ifc installed, in some cases the weighted flow control would still have to go on the return on the secondary? For example , 2 zones upper and lower both Hi temp baseboard. The weighted check would go on the return on 1st or 2nd floor zone? sorry for my dyslexia, you are a life saver,

in some, fairly rare cases you need checks on both supply and return

The check in the pump and another hydronic spring check on the return

That will be the best protection and also lowest pressure drop

Most prone are high temperature system where the buoyancy difference dtives ghost flow. Tall buildings with straight vertical runs, and of course mis- piped systems
