A long time customer called yesterday. I said, "Hi Frank, how are you doing?"

"Not good. Our son just passed away." Bit by bit the story followed. Their son is single and they've a tradition of eating Sunday breakfast together. Sunday he didn't come and wouldn't answer his phone, so they went to his place. They found him on the bedroom floor, called 911. Till the medics arrived Frank himself was passed out on the floor and his wife was not far from it also.

He wanted me to check things out as his son was installing a new boiler (himself) in his house. I found the exhaust pipe on the old Munchkin had popped off. His new boiler was mounted behind the Munchkin on the wall but no piping done yet. Very possible his working behind it knocked the exhaust off or at least loosened it.

Very sad. My state (MA) has a law named Nicole's Law, after a 7-year-old girl named Nicole died from CO poisoning when a snowdrift blocked a heating vent. The law requires CO detectors on every level of residences, including basements. As the saying goes, building codes are written in blood…
