Lock out on Carlin gas gun

OK, another post about my boiler.

The Carlin gas gun has - within the last 2 weeks - gone into "lock out" mode 3 times. It's easily rectified by pushing the red button, but obviously there's a problem. Before I call a pro, is there anything I should check? Here's a photo, I can provide more if needed.

Only advice would be for the pro to bring a 60200FR primary to upgrade the existing.

    It has diagnostics.

Carlin gas burners are the best. If you having problems something else is wrong

That's an older primary and they have been problematic. We routinely upgrade to the newer one that @HVACNUT mentioned and this solves the problem.

@Erin Holohan Haskell, I thought I asked the OP if he was ripping out his Carlin fired boiler, what does he plan to put in its place? How did that end up on the cutting room floor? That's a legitimate question. Maybe I'm thinking of a different thread. If so, apologies.

Sorry @HVACNUT I hadn't realized that was a question for the OP. My mistake.

No, it was a question for me, as I commented I had the same burner. Not clear to me what infraction I made in the post other than stating my dislike of the device. And I made a specific helpful suggestion for OP to try. Deleted.

I didn't mean to cause a ruckus. I'm ordering the new control. The problem is so intermittent. I did find the carlin manual and checked the flame rod and igniter - both were misaligned so I aligned them according to the manual and reassembled. The problem came back though, so I think replacing the control is the next step and maybe it can tell me what the problem is at least.

it’s not a like for like swap out: you’ll have to read the instructions once or twice

I bought and installed the new control Carlin 60200FR. Unfortunately this seems worse than the old control.

It initially worked but then gave a bunch of errors.

Flame at post purge (twice) with uAmps 1.0 and 0.7

eventually it got stuck giving a “no flame” error when I turned power off and on again. Pressing reset, then it gave a flame error with uAmps of 0.6. I disconnected the flame rod, still showed uA of 0.6.

I cleaned and reinstalled the flame rod (taking care to adjust it per the manual). The errors persisted. I checked the connections but nothing changed.

I reinstalled the old controller, it’s working. I guess I can push reset when I need to.

    Any idea what’s wrong?

sounds like there's stray current somewhere

where should I look? Does this mean there’s a shorted wire? Bad ground? Another sensor that’s failed?

Flame rod needs to be cleaned.. Remove draw assembly and clean rod with fine steel wool . Return spacer under lock nut the way you find it. Set O2 around 5%

why would that cause it to sense flame when there is no flame?

I did clean the flame rod. The control is sensing 0.6 uA with the rod attached or detached.

    It’s something else I think

I am thinking O2 settings , what are the readings ?

You most likely have a crack in the flame rod insulator. voltage is leaking to ground

Are you sure it's lined up correctly through the diffuser plate, and assembly depth is correct? Its not hard to mess either of those up. Has a combustion test been done? Having that info might help.

with the boiler off, no flame at all, it’s sensing flame EVEN WHEN the flame rod is unplugged.

I think it’s somehow seeing amperage from somewhere else.

That primary control puts a small AC voltage on the sensing electrode so when the flame is established it can rectify it into DC. I suspect the electrode has failed.
