Replacing boiler. Not sure how to correct.
I need to replace a boiler. It’s in a two family house serving one unit. The current one is not piped correctly so we will correct the boiler piping, but the system piping which looks original is piped in a way that I have never seen before. It is fed from two directions with a return in the middle and it looks like this may be how it was originally piped. I’m not sure if I should feed it in both directions. One side gets fed 2 inch and then the other side gets fed with 1 1/2”
as a separate main. It is a small system only about seven radiators EDR 291. My plan was to disconnect the second feed after the last radiator and add a main vent at that point, which would then be the end of the main. I have attached drawings. I’m not very good at drawing hopefully it is understandable.

Appears your main is low in the middle so if fed from one side just acts as parallel flow for the first half and counterflow for the second so your after diagram should work. The before diagram has the main fed from opposite sides both parallel flow but has them joining above the water line which is not good. The only way I could see the first before diagram working is if there were two separate main vents on either side of the junction with the return.
I'd have it piped like your after diagram which also provides a true header and equalizer.

That second main looks original. I need to go back and make sure it is pitched the right way
