What is this device thermac tr-od for?

This device is upstream to the water heater gas valve, I don't think it's serving any purpose now, as in I think gas just goes through it without "interacting" with it. I am curious about what purpose it might have served before.

It was made by thermac company with inscription tr-od and what appears to be HM.

    It's an old pressure regulator that was used with a long-gone water heater. As long as the gas pressure is under 10" water column or so, it's no longer needed. The gas valve on the present heater has a regulator built in.
