Taco SR504-Problem?

Options

Just recently I have notice something strange with the above. I have noticed that the circulator for 1 zone was running even though the indicator light was not on. This has happened a few times and most recently just 15 minutes ago. I switched the power on & off to the SR504 and the circulator turned off.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Disconnect the circulator wire in the relay and then attach a voltage meter to the empty terminals and watch for voltage . If you do replace the relay . If you see voltage on the bare set of wires , then there is a short down stream ..

What version or the SR504? there is the original with a metal cover and the SR5040-2 with metal cover and there is the SR504 later versions with the plastic covers. I think they are up to the SR504-5 now. There is also an SR504 EXP

Do you know if it only happens on the #1 zone? If it is the older models with the plug-in ice cube type relays, you may just need to replace one of those 24 v. plug-in relays. You can get the same relay fr less at WW Grainger relay or an electronics supplier

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

It is the model with the metal cover. It is the zone that is most used. So it sounds like a replacement is needed. Might swap one of the lesser used zones while I wait.

There is also a 120v. coil relay in there. Be careful not to mix them up. They all fit the same plug in socket. you will damage the 24v. coil relay if you plug it into a 120v. socket.

@Cyclist77 " So it sounds like a replacement is needed "

Did you mean just replace the relay or the whole SR504 ?

I'd swap the relay as mentioned above and see if the problem goes away and/or follows the relay from the zone that was originally problematic.

If it is just a bad relay I'd keep that SR504, relays are inexpensive, and easy to change. With the newer units the relays are soldered in, so not as easy to change or swap for troubleshooting. So, with the newer units, less options, just buy a new box for about 18 times the cost of a relay if there is an issue.

@Cyclist77 Like Ed mentioned, the first on the left is a 120v relay and then the 2nd from left would be for zone 1 and so on. To check to see if it is the ice cube relay, you can take the 3rd one from left ( zone 2 ) and switch it with the one for zone 1. If it works, then you know it's the ice cube relay. If it doesn't, then more than likely the SR504-2 would need to be replaced.

    Replacement Relays: 120 volt- SR120-001RP / 24 volt-SR024-001RP
