it is set up for hot water. looks like a gravity system unless there is a circulator somewhere we can't see.

also looks sooted from lack of return water temp protection.

there is no circ pump anywhere, not sure how it would cir hot water?! Why does it look like its set up for hot water but also gravity steam? Sorry Im not crazy familure with steam boiler

it isn't steam, it is gravity hot water. no circulator, the water moves by changing density as at is heated in the boiler and cooled in the emitters.

if it is replaced it probably has to be converted to a pumped system and if it is a conventional boiler it needs low water return temp protection.

there is an aquastat on the outlet and an expansion tank. do you have a picture of a radiator? There is no sight glass or try cocks or pressuretrol on the boiler, right?
