Two oil burner nozzle line questions - for a 1991 Beckett AFG oil burner.
Two questions regarding the Beckett "Reduced I.D. Nozzle Line Assembly" (introduced in ~1995?) vs. the original version used on earlier AFG oil burners (i.e. the "three-piece nozzle line", which included a "filler rod" inside the nozzle line):
- Does the new (Reduced I.D. version) nozzle require an oil burner with a fuel pump that has an integrated "solenoid valve" oil line shutoff switch, e.g. a Beckett/Suntec Cleancut fuel pump, in order to work well/correctly?
- Is the "filler rod" (used in the original, pre-1993, nozzle line assembly) meant to be able to "move freely" inside nozzle line?
Any information you may be able to provide would be helpful and much appreciated.
Thank you very much for you time and consideration!
Steve.

I don't know specifically but the purpose of the filler rod or reduced nozzle pipe size is to reduce the oil in the nozzle line to limit/prevent dripping. You probably already know this. I have seen burners with a loose filler rod. One MFG I know just used to cut a piece of welding rod and put it in there. I don't think which pump you have makes a difference but a clean cut or solenoid valve is always better for cleaner stops and starts.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience Ed. I especially appreciate hearing that you have also seen loose filler rods. I have noticed instances with my burner's nozzle line filler rod over the years (usually, when maintaining the nozzle and/or electrodes) when it is loose, and also not freely moving. (I assumed that when the filler rod is not loose, then it is probably "weakly binding" within the nozzle line, due to minor mechanical interference at/near the bend of the nozzle line.) So far (over last 32 years?), I have not experienced an issue with the system's operation in either case. This year, I was wondering if I could learn more on the matter, so I thought I would reach out. Thanks again for your kind reply. Best wishes for the holidays!
