Steam valve Q

Any reason why I couldn't pack the stem on this valve with graphite rope? I've contacted Tunstall for rebuild kits and all they have are tvr conversion kits that are $$$$ and wouldn't work with my built-in rads.

Thanks

isn't that a packless valve, doesn't that disc on top of the bellows make the seal for the stem?

It is packless. These are from the 20s and some are leaking steam.

Maybe I can just disassemble and repolish the mating surfaces?

I think you have to figure out where it is leaking. If it leaks where the stem connects to the bellows or the bellows are cracked you might be able to fix those with some rtv or a tiny drop of solder. I think NOS hoffman vapor valves show up on e-bay a lot.

The tunstall insert I think more or less converts it to a TRV.

Thanks. I'll look at the bellows one by one (25 of them) after I find a 2", 8-point deep socket

Nice thing about these cabinet rads is i don't need a mirror to find leaky valves, just have to look under it's cover.
