PTAC oversized issues.....

Options

I ordered a replacement PTAC unit 10 weeks ago. The old unit's fan was making a banging noise and no HVAC techs wanted to touch it. The new unit was promised 4-6 weeks after the order was placed. After numerous phone calls and run arounds, it turns out the distributor never placed the order with the manufacturer.

The replacement unit ordered was the smallest available unit - 9k BTU. This will only be available after 4-6 weeks from now, if I'm lucky. The manufacturer does have a 12k unit ready to be picked up today.

What issues will I run into with any oversized unit? The room being cooled is 300 sq ft.

The PTAC unit has an AC Compressor and an evaporator coil to provide cold air. Heating is provided by the building's copper pipes that run thru the unit. The PTACs fan blows air onto the hot copper pipes to circulate the hot air.

You could make the heating work but the AC will be awful. Oversized AC will make the unit cycle too often and it will not run enough to dehumidify properly. Not good.
