Air Venting Placement and Installation
Hello Everyone,
I am working on this building which has six (6) Hoffman 4A on the main steam lines throughout the basement. Have attached the steam layout that I drew and some of the existing air vents.
I am using the below chart to calculate the no. of vents required for the whole steam line:
Now, for the main steam line highlighted under the dashed line/loop with the red color in the layout, if you calculate the length of the line, it comes around 61 feet of 6" and 139 feet of 5". The existing vents are not enough to vent the whole steam system
I have some questions regarding this:
- Can I add additional vents at the middle of main steam lines or the vents should go only at the end of main line. Because as per the above venting chart, you need certain no. of vents per 100 feet. So should I add all the vents at the end or can I add some vents in the middle?
- Should I replace the existing Hoffman 4A with Gorton #2? Is it recommended to replace the existing smaller air vents with bigger vents at the same exact location? Or should I neglect those and calculate no. of Gorton#2 vents based on that. Note that some of the existing air vents are not in good physical condition (painted over/ rusted).
Thank you.
Regards,
Suchit.

Putting the vents along the main is ok. Gorton's vent faster than Hoffmans. Maybe you need some Barnes and Jones Bigmouth vents.
Is this one pipe or two pipe steam? do you have any vented condensate pumps or a boiler feed tank? That is a lot of air to remove.
Hard to tell from the drawing.

Thanks a lot. It's a one-pipe steam system and they don't have any vented condensate pumps or boiler feed tank. I was surprise that the main line is 5 inches till the very end.
Apparently, I might need to recommend installing ten (10) Gorton#2 for the main line. Also, for the existing vents which are rusty/ painted over, should I remove them/ keep them/ replace it with same Hoffman 4A or Gorton#2?
