Am I just clumsy or do others have trouble getting flame rod/ignition back into Carlin EZ Gas

Honestly I have to consult my horoscope to remember whether these have the A or B diffuser. never had a 9 slot. in some ways it looks like I would have less trouble with that because the flame rod could not accidentally go into one of the smaller diffused holes which happens every friggin time i put one of these back together and then i get the shorted flame rod fault.

I am forever having to pull the burner out get the damn rod in the right hole. and I often end up checking the flame rod when I forget that very small air adjustments can change its output (I'm not sure what that is). I'm headed back to that job with combustion analyzer this morning but on the fly last night I made maybe a low single digit percentage of opening change and went from barely 1 microamp to 2.3-2.7 which is carlin's target.

now maybe that is just a cheat and it means the rod is 'old' or 'weak'. i don't know if it is two metals or what aspect of its metallurgy would be degraded over time. and I think from the difficulty in removal (including my own forgetting to out the removable air channelling cowling that makes handling easier but still not convenient) I often end up with a broken porcelain although I can't be sure if it was cracked before or not. But as long as some is still functional and clamped porcelain insulation I cleaned the rod and once i finally get it back in the right place it works fine.

And honestly I had, in this case, remembered to try minor air adjustment and it was obtaining 2.5 microamps before I took it out, but because it was marginal and locking out when I arrived and before I adjusted the air, I felt like I should look at it–kind of like you want to look at spark plugs if you think the engine is running but could run a little better kind a thing. albeit i'm not really sure, besides the perrenial light brown deposit or corrosion which i sanded off, what I am actually looking for–other than a headache putting the thing back togerther.)
