The service call from Hell

My guys did a Tune-Up on a Riello on a Buderus Boiler; notwithstanding that, everything was set to specs, we had several burner lockouts. Finally, fixed the lockout problem,

Funny how increasing the gap on the electrodes over what specs call for works wonders.

Here is when it turned to ****, Customer calls no heat, he tried the reset and nothing happened.

I go over and put the Logamatic 2107 to day mode from Automatic mode, and the burner fires up.

The next day, the customer informs me that the burned short-cycled all night.

I get there, and the burner is running fine, and the house is warm.

The next day, no heat again, the high limit had popped - Reset the high limit.

Turned the temperature dial down to 120 and watched the boiler get up to 130 without stopping

I pulled the wire off the temperature switch, and the boiler continued to run.

Obviously, the control is bad and will be replaced. Funny how it all started after a Tune-Up.

The customer must think the tune-up caused the control problems

Any comments? 49 years of experience, and this is the worst call.

    I'm curious, What were you reading the temperature off of? the boiler gauge or the 2107? And which temperature switch did you disconnect? And did you switch from auto to day at the room sensor?

    If you removed a wire from the limit and the burner continues to run… that means wrong wiring not a bad limit control. Did you mean to say: "I pulled the wire off the temperature switch, and the burner stopped running"?

    Sometimes you need to bite the bullet. If your customer is reasonable and you present the case that the control was going bad anyway and it just happened to be near the time of the tune-up. Since I can't prove that the tune up didn't cause the problem and You can't prove that it did cause the problem, perhaps we can make a compromise and split the cost of the new control. Charge full price for the repair and offer a 50% warranty discount for the compromise. I hope that the limit control was not non replaceable part of the expensive 2107.

    49 years and this is the worst then I would say you have done an exceptional job over your career and deserve a pat on the back

    It has happened to all of us, I am sure. For me it has happened many times.

    Retired 7 years and I still think about thing that happened that we never found a reason for.

    Check to see if the stainless well with all the sensors are inserted is leaking .. If so replace well and thermistors .. Top of boiler

    Beware .. The control stays on Auto , manual mode you need to adjust the boiler temperature, and if there is a indirect , the hot water pump will stays on constant. The boiler temp and the hot water temp will match the boiler temp setting .

    Give them a price for a new control

    Your guy damaged the unit or he didn't. Once YOU decide the answer to that, then you deliver the news to the homeowner.
