Seriously though, why is that chrome plated? Is there a story behind it?

I saved a Hoffman #5
"Hoffman quick vent float air valve"
"Patented Sept.1.1914" 3/8" male threads. It is chrome plated to the quality of high end faucets. Float is loose inside when shaken.
Found, connected, on the end of main in 1922 school storage closet.
Replaced with Gorton #2…..not chromed.
