Weird bathtub trap

First time I see a trap like this,

is it just a trap or was it doing something else for the size that it is it should to more 😏

    It is a drum trap in tubular brass.

    Usually that means it is wet vented for an extended length or is arranged like an s trap where it goes down rater than directly in to a vented vertical section.

    some hybrid version drum / ptrap? It would be interesting to see to see the inside

    Drum traps were common pre 1950s. Clog prone, hard to service.

    P traps tend to scour clean, I think drum traps have been banned for years in the codes

    Yes interesting it wasn't replaced yet, but why would you make a trap so big what was the purpose

    was that the prototype for the traps we have

    That's look like what Manny called a Bell Trap...illegal...has interior partitions. If it didn't clog up or leak...no reason to replace it..Mad Dog

    holds more water so it is less likely to get syphoned dry from questionable venting arrangements

    According to NJ plumbing code, that looks like a partition trap. Kind of. But not really.
