White-Rodgers 5D51-78 Fan Control - SOLVED
After almost 50 years my original White-Rodgers fan control wore out. Unlike the original, the replacement control had a MANUAL/AUTO control lever. I had the first replacement in about a year and several times it would switch to MAN by itself. So, I bought another one and it has done the same thing twice since I installed it in March. Is this a common problem with these units? Is there a way to fix this?

maybe the cover or something else is sitting in such a way that it is moving it or you got 2 from am bad run. you could try a honeywell/resideo.

No, it runs smooth.

Does the lever actually get moved by itself to the manual position.
Maybe cover the slot in the cover so the lever can't move

Lever actually moves off the detent by itself. Need to come up with a way to hold it in the AUTO position. Emailed Emerson, but they did not reply.

2nd one with the same problem. This one does not do it as often as the first one.

stuff happened with the people that knew how to manufacture stuff during covid. if you bought both from the same place it may have come from the same run.

The Honeywell has a push/pull button rather than a slide switch. You can get them without the switch. It's kind of obsolete anyway.

Good to know. Wish I had looked for another brand before I replaced it the 2nd time with the same.
"Obsolete anyway" so is my furnace at 50 years old, but it is still in great shape.

the manual fan switch is mostly obsolete. it is usually controlled by a relay through a switch on the t-stat now

Not the fan/limit so much as the fan switch. Most have fan control through the thermostat on the low voltage circuit now.

I have been running with the cover off. I will leave it on and see if that helps it to stay in AUTO.

might have to take that plastic rivet out and put a washer under the head to make it tighter or replace it with a screw and nylock nut so you can adjust the tension. is it always in auto if you remove the lever altogether? definitely a manufacturing tolerance or untested design change thing.

might also talk to who you bought it from, if it is a real supply house they should be able to get to their wr rep about it.

Take some duct tape and cut a slot in it and tape it over the lever. Its a hack.
Or do the same with a piece of sheet metal and put a short screw to hold it in place

Do I really need to say it?
It should be next to the WD40 in the toolbox
