With the positive pressure gas train deign of mod cons and tankless water heaters I'd be concerned about explosion risk too. Maybe install low level CO detectors and interlock the gas supply to combustible gas detectors.

$450????? I'd be finding a new manufacturer- that is absolute bogus. $450 barely gets me to the job site, much less unpack any tools

Hi, Hope his doesn't sound too cowboy, but If they don't need you to return the heaters, get the new ones and store them in a nice, dry place. Fix the old heaters and install low level CO detectors. Use the money you saved to buy a good umbrella policy, just in case. Now you've got spares as needed. 🤠

    Yours, Larry

oh wow, could you feel the air coming out from the gasket area?

Is this is only with the CX units? I haven’t seen it on any of the RX’s … yet.

900 bucks to a diy homeowner is a great deal? Plus a diagnostic fee. Are you a Rinnai cerfied installer? Gone to any of their trainings?

  • Sometimes, you have to do things to serve your clients and not get paid full rate. We changed out 15 Viessmann HX's on their recall - good money at $1,000 each. But the recent Triangle Tube safety recall at $350 ea. doesn't really pay well for 3-4 hrs. of labor, but lends itself to summer work when it's slow here. It also builds confidence with your customer base.

    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab

Rick, you are to be commended for doggedly tracking down the cause. Very few would do this. Mad Dog

@Alan (California Radiant) Forbes I do agree that one needs to bite the bullet sometimes to best serve the customers, but once again, I'd be looking for a new manufacturer if all they'll pay for a swap is $450. That's garbage. I'm a Lochinvar guy and the handful of times I've needed to do warranty work, they pay my regular rate without question and it's a whole lot more than $450. I swapped out a Ruud combi for somebody last winter (they bought it at Menards and self installed, had a leaking HX after 2 years) and even they being a mediocre company offered a new boiler as paid the full price for diagnosis and swap. Rinnai is a big enough operation that $450 is a complete insult to their supporters.
