Redesigned Hydronic Heating System

Until recently, my 100-year-old house on Long Island had the same 100-year-old hot water heating pipes it came with, albeit with a newer boiler. I was inclined to leave them alone, because they worked. But we wanted to put a couch in the basement and my wife didn't want people whacking their heads on the 2-inch steel pipes, which were perfectly graded for an old school boiler with no circulator pump, and only one zone.

The problem, though, is that no one seemed to know anything about how to reconfigure it. Some contractors SAID they did, but gave little in the way of explanation that did anything to inspire confidence. Then I found @Mad Dog_2 on this board, and ended up hiring him to redesign my entire heating system with state-of-the-art parts.

Now there are multiple zones, and every radiator has its own supply and return lines, run in 1/2-inch PEX. Not only does it LOOK amazing, with copper manifolds, gauges, ball valves, and a computer controller, but it works better than ever, too. The radiators all get much hotter, and the boiler doesn't use as much fuel. The cherry on top? No giant steel pipes hanging from the ceiling. This project was by no means cheap, but Matt cut me a break for cutting out the existing piping myself. (I even got a whole $15 for it at the metal recycler!)

If you need to hire someone to reconfigure your heating system, Matt will do a great job. He uses the best parts, and his attention to details is bar none. Best of all, he actually knows what he's doing, approaching the heating system holistically.

We're ready for the next 100 years. Thanks, Matt!

Thanks Gents...It's hard to tell from the picture, but Ben handmade the backing board expertly like a Millwright with nice finish & moldings too! I wish 50% of the general public would think foward & deep like Ben and appreciate Old School craftsmanship & the pluses of using the finest materials.

Thank you for the compliments Ben & all. Mad Dog
