Netherlands expansion tank replacement source

Apparently, Captured Energy Solutions has shut down. Tom has been my source for parts for many years and the business license has not been renewed and calls/texts are not being returned.

The expansion tank is waterlogged as evidenced by liquid in the Schrader valve. This is not the first time I had to replace this tank. It is installed sideways and has a Schrader valve on the side so it can be used without removing the tank.

Where can I get a new one? All of the fittings are metric.

What are the actual dimensions? Diameter and length.

Zilmet has an office in the US now, maybe they could get you a metric dimension tank. Or Amazon UK. There are other UK hydronic suppliers that ship to the US.

Could you mount the tank outside the box?

metric adapters are easy to find. Or just file the end of a 3/4 X 1/2 bushing and a 3/4" G thread nut fits. With a fiber washer for the seal. Pex to a remote tank location.

    Very helpful answer Bob.

The tank's diameter is 7-77/100" (tree measuring tape) or approximately 19.7cm X ~10.25" or 26cm long (measured from back of cabinet to front of bottle but not the fitting) As you likely surmised, the OD of the thread is 1-1/32" to the top of the threads.

It could be outside of the wall hung cabinet but would block the isolation valves unless there were some 90s or a flexible PEX or hose connection. (I have zero PEX experience and tools.) The current attachment is a tiny braided tube to the side of the boiler's fill fitting. If it would be OK, it would be possible to use a 1x1/2" tee on the boiler piping to the building. This tee is being used for draining the loop when replacing the fluid. It currently has a "hose boiler drain valve" on it (so a very short, or coiled, washing machine hose could be used with the handle removed from the valve). If that is an acceptable location then the existing tank could remain in place and no metric fittings would have to be disturbed. The expansion tank would be about the same distance from the combustion chamber/water jacket as the existing tank.

Does the fiber washer fit between the freshly cut end of the 3/4x1/2 adapter and the hose to the existing tank sort of like a hose washer? I take it that the new tank will have a 1/2" NPT thread?

While you didn't ask (because you probably know) the boiler is rated at 94,500 BTUH input.

With a pic of your piping maybe we can see another connection option.

An Amtrol ThermTrol ST-5 is real close in size, here is the spec. It has a 3/4 MPT thread and your flex will connect to that. It has a fiber washer, but you can make a standard rubber hose washer work with a small trim.

Can you relocate or extend the connection outside the unit , this way your not tied down with a special tank ?

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Ouch, sorry the text is so small. (It is 24 point.) The blue handle of the drain valve is barely visible at the bottom of the photo. The braided tube is to the existing expansion tank. I deeply appreciate all of the comments.

BTW, I could cut a hole in the bottom of the cabinet and run the existing SS braided tube down to the new expansion tank since it likely cannot be installed horizontally (according to some instructions I saw,) even if it fit inside. I could use a bushing on the hole to protect the braid and reduce air ingress.

More visible text (same ugly photo).

Then Amtrol I linked above looks to be very similar in dimension?

I have a Watts version, and the BSP metric nut fits well. Dimension are the same as the Amtrol ThermTrol

Does the case have any wiggle room?

If not, yes you can mount it vertically, if that flex reaches.. If you use a DHW ThermTrol type they are a coated tank, no rusting.

  • Yes, you can mount it horizontally - we've had this discussion here before. It's all about support. Secure it properly and it won't be a problem.

It looks like a standard 2 gallon tank will work, but not sideways. And, modification to the fitting is required and a fiber or plastic washer will be needed to seal the connection.

    Thank you everyone!

Hello everyone. This is Tom with Captured Energy Solutions, LLC. We are still in business and carry most parts for the Monitor boiler(s); the MZ (gas fired boiler)

    and FCX (oil fired boiler).

The expansion tank and combustion blower are no longer available; however, we do have options. Please contact me if you need parts, tech support, etc.

    We also make zone panels.
