Cast iron boiler replacement help

Tripp
Tripp Member Posts: 1

My Slantfin boiler recently cracked after 30 years of service and I need some advise on a good, but inexpensive cast iron model to replace it with. I live in Colorado at about 6500 feet altitude. I do not need or want high efficiency and it supplies heat to the hydranic heated floors. The domestic hot water is supplied by a stand alone water heater. I am getting some big quotes back and just want to make sure I am not getting hosed, no pun intented. Anyting else to consider in the boiler replacemant?

Also what is a typical markup for purchases by the plumber?

Thanks, Tripp

Give a photo of your existing installation, with all manifold piping in the photo along with boiler.

Don't talk $$ on this site but at least can see what your up against. Prices have gone pretty high these days. BTW maybe you are just getting piped and not hosed! :)

Did it ever occur to you that this SF boiler failed because it could have been improperly installed/piped since it went in? A radiantly heated building with a cast iron boiler MUST be carefully piped out.

Keep an open mind please, I know you don't want to spend alot, but it may very well make more sense ($$$) to use a more modern Condensing boiler on this low temp radiant system. Mad Dog

I want to clarify that you mean radiantly heated floors...mad Dog

Not much good news for Mr. Tripp.

I would suggest choosing your contractor as much as the boiler manufacturer. A company that will install AND service your new boiler should go hand in hand.
