Pipes banging in the walls when the thermostat turns on

We live in a two story condo, does not do this upstairs, but when the thermostat on floor one click on, there is frequently a banging sound from the pipes, sometimes the walls literally shudder from the impact. I had a plumber come over and of course it did not do this when I turned the thermostat on, but it does it all the time and seems to be getting worse.
Love any possible solutions….

How old is the building and what type of heating system does it have? If you don't know, could you take a few pictures of the boiler and associated piping as you can see and post them here? Some pictures of radiators would be helpful too.
If you have someone come out to look at it, turn the thermostat down a few degrees a few hours before they arrive, then turn it back up when they get there. These problems tend to be more pronounced when the system is recovering from a setback
