the furnace was lighting up and winding noise and everything now it isn’t. Do I turn off the switch on the side of the furnace or the gas valve. I’m using electric space heaters. No idea when I will fix don’t have money to repair it.

Well if your diagnosis is correct and the thermostat is broken and unable to command the heating system into operation, you probably could just leave it alone until it gets repaired. Turning the electrical switch on the furnace off and / or the gas valve should not hurt anything an may afford you an extra margin for safety if something else is actually defective.

Electric space heaters have their own safety risks and may not heat the structure sufficiently to prevent pipes from freezing, etc. There is a reason or few that Electric space heaters are not the go to equipment for heating a structure.

I'd get the heating system repaired ASAP.

The thermostat is broken? How do you know this? A winding noise and now it isn't? Are you sure the winding noise was from the furnace? Has the noise gone away? When you set the temperature on the thermostat does the furnace turn on? Do you have heat? Space heaters are not something one would want to continue to use.
