Taco Switching Relay- Aged Out?

As I begin to assemble my materials list I was wondering if our 15 year old Taco Switching Relay should be swapped out for a new one?

Since I will be replacing our coal stoker boiler with a CI boiler am I best served with all new components?

Thanks

They are very durable units if not abused.

Your call………..it's simply a decision based upon money. You spend your money…………you get brand new.

Everything new. Pipes cut to ceiling. All new wiring and controls.

If it is a unit that the relays are plugged into sockets, I'd keep the old one.

All electro-mechanical devices have a cycle life. It really depends on how many on/ off cycles it has gone through.

I think those relays are replaceable, probably not the transformer. Those are the most common failures.

Since it is coming up on 16 years old and I am going all in for a new boiler and indirect water heater. The $ of a new switching relay is really not a large concern.

So after I change from a coal stoker boiler and my 2 trips daily to the basement. I wonder what I will do with all my extre time!

Well, I'd keep the old one as a spare. The newer versions have no user serviceable components (like relays in sockets). To me it is not about cost, it is about having heat where and when you need it. Spare relays are easy and they can be swapped around.

So are there other brands that have the ability to swap out relays?

Another option is buy a realy box with one er two extra relays. If you have 4 zones, buy a 6 zone. Then you have a spare relay ready to go.

I don't know that I ever replaced one of the "ice cube" relays in a relay box. Transformers yes, but no relays.

Consider the Caleffi brand. Easy to replace transformers, auto reset fuses. So far it works with 4 or 5 versions of the Nest, as well as Ecobee and other challenging thermostats.

if it's a 15-year-old relay, equipped with ice cube relays, the relays are replaceable. the current solid-state relays are not. If it's not broken why replace it. you can always replace it if necessary.
