Basics of Indoor Air Quality

We of the Hydronic Realm often don't think too much about Indoor Air Quality, but that mindset is obsolete. We need to look at the Big Picture, not just the heating system.

Recently moved into a condo (built about 1970’s) with HVAC system. During recent routine housecleaning, we vacuumed the cold air return cover. Vacuum pulled lot of dust, dirt, etc. So I said let me pull the cover off and give it a more thorough cleaning.
To my surprise, I discovered the ductwork was insulated on the inside with about a 1/2” of what resembled fiberglass, but it was more like black rock wool glued to a cloth (?) layer against the wall of the ductwork. Could this be asbestos? If not, is this a usual practice to insulate the interior of HVAC ducts?
Thanks for any suggestions/advice!

Thanks, but it seems friable so that can’t be good! Guess we will call HVAC SERVICE!

Hi @BradHotNCold , Here's a short description of this type of insulation. Installed right, there should be very little fiberglass available to the air-stream. 😊.
