Types of Radiators

was wondering if the types of radiators would cause any issues. House around 1896…steam heat - one pipe….(now oil but inittally was coal!)…seems most radiators are steam radiators but there are some smaller tube ones….just so happens they seem to be the ones that make the hissing /loud noises when heat is first on. see photos…..would the radiator sizes make any difference? 3111 is the larger radiator.

    Where's the vent?

Then it is in the wrong spot. Up top it will tend to close prematurely before the radiator is properly filled with steam. This effectively makes the radiator smaller. What vents do you have on those small radiators? When you say they are making the hissing "when the heat first on" do you mean when first on during a morning recovery?

Hoffman adjustable….and yes…first thing in the morning…turn up a degree or two and it sounds like airplane taking off and wet steam

Close off that hole near the top with a 1/8 plug and drill and tap for 1/8 NPT here.

Try a different brand radiator vent before doing anything else.

Night setbacks often cause this problem with steam systems.

If you post a photo of the piping above the boiler, and of the runout (horizontal pipe) to one of the noisy radiators, these folks will give you plenty of suggestions before you start throwing parts at the problem.
