Magnetic Filter?
How important is a magnetic filter on a radiant heating system with pex ,copper and a bit of iron pipe?

Not very. As long as the fill water is of decent quality and the the system flushed.
What type of boiler?

the pump and expansion tank would be the cause of magnetite. If you have a system that is 100% oxygen free, which is all but impossible.

Currently a coal stoker boiler. But in the active research mode looking at NG.

adding a hydronic conditioner once you have a clean system filled with good water is a wise investment in my opinion.
The conditioner will have oxygen scavengers, ph buffers, film providers to protect the multimetal components in your system.
Not unlike the fluids in your vehicles, it will need to be checked, maintained, possibly boosted from time to time.
