Inconsistent Shower Temperature

We just moved into our 120 year old house. When we go to shower we have about 2 minutes of hot water then the water goes cold. After about 10 mins the hot water will come back. This is after no other showers have been taken and no one has been using water for anything. We have oil and I will attatched a picture of our boiler I think it is. Could it just be the pressure? Or do we need to install a tankless system? Thanks for your help!

You current have a tankless system, that’s the issue :). There’s no need for a new system at this point. Find someone to fix the current one.

    Here is the critical question:

When it goes cold………..do you leave it running at full hot for 10 minutes and stand away………….or do you shut it off and wait 10 minutes and try it again?

we leave it running and deal with it cold. If you take a long enough shower you’ll get some hot water at the end.

What exactly needs to be fixed on the system? Thanks for your help

    Good info.

My suspicion is that the settings on the boiler are incorrect. If the boiler can recover and provide HW in 10 minutes, all it needs is an adjustment.

Can you find the aquastat and take a photo of it with the cover removed? I am guessing from your photo that it is the grey box on the right side of the boiler near the top.

Sorry for such a late reply. Here is a picture of that box with the cover removed

You have the Honeywell L7224 control.

Here are the operating instructions for it.

Read it carefully and understand how to go into the setup for it. What I need to know is the HL (high limit) LL (low limit) and the Ldf (Low Limit differential).

Replace the coil or have it cleaned.

You should have a thermostatic mixing valve on that domestic coil for preventing spikes & scalding. I always install a thermometer guage on the outlet so you know what temp is going out. Mad Dog
