Boiler issue

I have a radiant heating system in my home using a Well McClain gold GV boiler, series 4.
Recently I noticed that it was stopping and starting frequently. I disconnected the fresh air intake tube, 3-in diameter roughly 25 ft long to the exterior the house, to check for debris. It was none, but as it turned out, the boiler ran just fine without the tube connected to it. The moment I reattach the intake tube. The boiler shuts down, only to restart and run perfectly fine when I disconnect the intake tube again. Why?
