Totally new to this space -forgive any ignorance .

I just bought a new house and I went to check the filters for the ac/furnace… There are six individual filters in a zigzag pattern

What ism I dealing with here? Just old?? I tried to research elsewhere, but I’ve come up empty so far.

house is 80+ years old.

Thank you!

Lennox LX 6H?

The filters are installed in a zig zag pattern to get more surface area of filtration in a given air handler (box size)

That filter arrangement is common on commercial size systems, for instance the makeup air unit in my 128 unit condo building. It's much less common in individual houses.

I think you have an electrostatic filter system. Someone discarded the original metal "filter cells". Unfortunate, because they are washable in soap and water. They replaced the original metal "filter cells" with standard disposable one inch paper filters. The guides for the "filter cells" are a little too wide for the one inch filters.

That system you have may be for a commercial installation that someone installed in your home. Those filters should be a 2" wide metal type filters made specifically for that unit and were electrically charged with a high voltage. They claimed that these units cleaned the air very well, but needed monthly cleaning. I never liked this type unit but that is my choice. There should also be a power unit included in the package. My guess is that the power unit went "bad" and the owner got rid of the electronic part and installed regular filters. Post a picture of the whole unit so we can see just what equipment is installed. That model Lennox furnace with the panel lock levers was fairly common when I got into the HVAC business in the late 60's
