Boiler making a poppin/clicking sounds

After the assistance from those whom gave me sound advise I purchased a new expansion tank made for heating systems with a 12psi charge and fired up the boiler. As the temperature got near 160° the boiler was making a popping sound and the system pressure was around 20psi. Throughout the warming process the pressure was climbing from 12 psi up to 25psi and all radiators were emitting water. So I bled off the pressure through the drain valve little by little to keep it as close to 20-25psi as I could.

My question is the sounds it was making, is that normal

What boiler? Most times it indicates the boiler needs a cleaning, inside. A hydronic cleaner, then flush and refill.

    It’s a New Yorker Low Pressure CG-70

Expansion tanks are sized based on the water volume of the system. What kind of radiators do you have? Cast iron, or fin tube? Your pressure range is excessive, which indicates that the expansion tank may be undersized.

cast iron and the old tank was same as the new one 4.5 gallons. The only difference it was a DWH with a factory charge of 40psi and the new one is for boiler set at 12psi. The old one had a ruptured bladder and full of water but I am guessing it was bled down. I really do appreciate you trying to help me. I am on my on with this one since I spent my savings having a new gas valve and pilot assembly installed. Since then it kept blowing the PRV so a new one along with a new inlet valve. Is it wrong to remove water from the drain valve since all the radiators are releasing water instead of air ?

It sounds like you have an undersized expansion tank. Cast-iron radiators hold a large volume of water, unlike fin tube and other more modern types of radiation. The tank manufacturers have sizing charts.

Normal? Popping noise is usually a result of debris on the bottom of the boiler over the flame area where the debris allows the water to make the water flash into tiny steam bubbles. Boilers can make noise, so your question requires a sound sample. Steel boilers are known for being more audible than cast iron. Your fill pressure issue can be a fill valve setting, a tank pressure setting, or a new tank fail as in bladders stick to steel when left in the warehouse too long, or bladder rupture. Check your size and follow the tank install instructions. Some are limited in their position orientation.

I did see that orientation is important and the install manual did not mention anything other than the illustration showing the threaded end is pointed up. So tomorrow I am going to replumb it to get that orientation correct

ok tank should be correct at least from the research I have done yet the high pressure is still an issue. Th PRV gave out in the middle of the night. I don’t know what to do next
