Compression Tank
Where would be the best place to mount the compression tank with the current piping configuration. 2 zones. Would it be acceptable to mount the tank on one return even though there are 2 zones? Relief valve opening. Replaced compression tank in current upside down position due to customer not wanting to reconfigure piping arrangement.

you would like the tank connection on the inlet of the circs. But with two circs pumping into the boiler on the return, that is not an easy fix.
While not ideal it will work as shown
Same with the tank position nipple up is preferred, manufactures show nipple down or horizontal as options

As Hot Rod stated the location of this "expansion tank" is not ideal and the piping should be corrected and an air scoop added, the customer should fully understand this.

Asking your personal opinion, how would you correct the piping on the return side in order to correctly mount the expansion tank. And where would you add an air scoop. The 1 1/4 copper line is the return line from baseboard convectors for the addition. The black iron pipe is the return for the old part of the two story home. The supply leaves the top of the boiler and tees off with a flow check on rash supply leaving the tee.

Unless you want to re pipe everything leave it as is. Most residential systems will work ok when pumping toward the ex-tank because the circuits have little restriction. Pumping away from the ex tank is the best option.

you would need to move the pumps to the supply piping
Come off the boiler supply, install the air sep next, the expansion tank then the two pumps.
Or the tank on the return if it is a cast iron or low pressure drop boiler
