Check out the drain dip tube from this smart 80 water heater.

Does it serve as the anode, or is there another problem going on.

This sleeve goes in the cold water inlet.

There were a bunch of defective dip tubes around, but I though they were worked out by now.

I'd sure have your water analyzed.

IIts 2009 install.

The house had a little taco circ pump that ran 24/7 for most of that time.

I wonder if there is debris that was swirling around in there.

I'm replacing the smart 80 indirect with another 80.

It had a slow leak under the jacket somewhere, lots of leaks that probably lead to corrosion.

I bet the showers and faucets in this place are packed.

Curious to know what causes it to break down. Wouldn't expect it from plastic, but I guess it's not uncommon.

Looks like it was bead blasted, i wonder if it is chunks being circulated 24/7 that caused it.

Hi, About the original did tube problem with Perfection dip tubes, they had made the tubes with substandard material, so it would crack and disintegrate, letting plastic bits clog up the plumbing and fixtures. That problem has long since been settled. Even so I have seen the newer, blue dip tubes fail. Yours looks like some combination of poor dip tube manufacture and possibly strange water chemistry… maybe heat too.

Almost certainly plastic bits were circulating in the water supplied by that tank, as the plastic is slightly lighter than water. A cheap trick for backflushing fixtures and pipes is to stick a coin or cut a piece of heavy tape round to fit behind an aerator. Then shut off water and disconnect the hot line from the tank. Hook up a hose or put a bucket under that pipe. Now open the faucet halfway between hot and cold. Cold water won't be able to flow out the tap, so will travel backwards down the hot line and out into the hose or bucket. This is a good and quick way to clean out difficult-to-disassemble fixtures. 🤠
