Beyond the set point
I'm dealing with a family member that has a older peerless boiler and it started to go higher than the desired set point at the stat? Any suggestions

Post some pictures of the boiler on here so we have some idea of how the boiler is installed. Not every boiler is the same. Some burn oil, some burn gas. Some boilers heat and circulate water, some produce steam. Without pictures or a lot more details it will be tough to assist you without being there in person.

There are different thermostats and each one addresses that problem differently.
Digital thermostats can have the set point adjusted to switch on and off at -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, and 3 degrees different from the numbers you see on the display. That is to combat the over run associated with some older systems. If your thermostat is older and you have a mercury switch inside, than the thermostat must be level and secure tight to the wall. if it is loose and someone bumped it, the calibrations may be way off. Other factors are cycle per hour and heat anticipator settings. each thermostaat has a different way to address your situation.
What Thermostat do you have?

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Is this a steam or hot water system? One thermostat zone or more than one?
