Regulator and backflow preventer
I have read in a couple of places that mention the pressure regulator in this aqua balance boiler freshwater fill line
system should go after the backflow preventer, anybody agree with this?
If that's the case previous owner plum this One backwards.

You have a very tight spot there for sure. See if you can get a look at the bottom or the side of the unit. The arrow [and] direction of flow need to be verified.
Take a look at this picture. See the arrow. It might prove your suspicions correct. You will need to turn the thing around if your direction of flow is wrong. So which way is the water coming from? Varify that and go from there.

The arrows on the regulator and the backflow preventer are pointing in the right direction, I just replaced the backflow preventer because it was causing a lot of problems with the loss of pressure. Now once in a while the pressure regulator will hang up and all I got to do is fiddle with it and it goes back to working for a while.

I don't see a reason why the regulator can't be taken apart and cleaned so it can be reused, or is this not a good idea?

A small speck of dirt or rust can cause both a backflow and fill valve to leak
That backflow should have a small screen on the inlet side. This is usually adequate to protect both. Unless you have a large amount of crud in your water
If you have a leak free system you would be able to turn off that fill assembly. Many hydronic installers insist on the valve being left off.

When I replace the backflow preventer I remember it had a screen on the inlet side to filter debris, but it's obviously in the wrong location so I will take the pressure regulator off and take it apart clean it up good and then I'll swap the two the way they belong
