Will adding a heat pump to a high velocity AC system be efficient?

Hi all, I currently have a space pak high velocity system for AC and an oil fired steam boiler with a hot water loop for heating and would like to upgrade the Lennox condenser to a heat pump but keep the boiler for those days when the heat pump doesn't sufficiently heat our 2,100 sq ft colonial home. Is this possible and does anybody have any experience with the heat pump working efficiently? Thanks to everyone for your input.

As long as it is compatible with the air handler, you can look up the different approved match up combinations here. https://www.ahridirectory.org/NewSearch?programId=69&searchTypeId=3&productTypeId=3523 then fill in the necessary info to get the available ratings

    • Select Manufacturer type as Mix Match
    • Select Outdoor Unit brand or leave it blank
    • Select Indoor Unit Brand. (I believe Unico is the only HV brand in the choices
    • Select the Size ( min 32000 to max 39000 for 3 ton)
    • Select the SEER min and max

    Then click on search

Then wait a couple of seconds and the different options will populate. If you have too many choices, (this search got over 700 hits) then select a Brand Name for the outdoor unit. You can even select a specific model number of outdoor unit. If you give it the full model number you may not get anything. You may need to leave off the last few numbers of the model number The more specific

information you ask for, the less options you will get.

By selecting a specific Trane Model Number, I got only 14 matching systems with a few different air handler choices. with back up heat and without.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Since you are keeping the boiler, have the contractor size the heat pump for cooling, not heating. An oversized heat pump will not be as effective at removing humidity.

You want it sized so it is running constantly on a 90 degree day. Too many contractors don't want to do this and will fight you and ignore you on this. The sooner you determine what type of contractor they are, the sooner you can eliminate them from your pool of prospective contractors.

we all seem to define efficiency differently, but yes this will work just fine.

Is your air handler multi speed? Fan speed is part of the question.
