Changing radiator vent - how do I get it vertically

I was able to get off after lots of penetrating oil and using vise drips my old dole company 1A radiator vent. I plan on buying a maid o mist but I thought I would try out putting on one of the newer radiator vents I have in the house to make sure it all works. However when I put it on the radiator vent only tightens up when it is upside down (and is loose when vertical), I have tried this with a vent-rite (picture) and varivalve. How do I get the radiator vent to be vertical so it can actually work? I am almost certain the radiator threading is fine as the radiator vent goes in smoothly, not sure if there is a potential parts different, seems like it is all 1/8 NPT. I am sorry if this is an easy question but I have searched everywhere and haven't seen it mentioned.

Try a couple of wraps of Teflon pipe thread tape.—
