That all sounds normal. But I do heat what appears to be a faint gear grinding noise at the very beginning. That may be the air gate opening. There is a motor that opens and closes the air gate that controls the amount of combustion air that can travel thru the heater. When the burner is off, that air gate closes to reduce off cycle air flow thru the heater. Off cycle air flow thru the burner to the heat exchanger to the chimney will draw valuable heat energy up the chimney. By closing the gate, the amount of air that can steal that heat is reduced.

If you take the blue cover off (loosen 3 philips screws, don't remove them) you can observe the motor that opens and closes the air gate. on the right side of the burner. If you discover that IS the noise, then you can feel goos that the motor is working to save you energy!

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

This is the 40 without air gate actuator motor. It has a fixed position that is adjusted manually. The grinding is the noise I hear which you mentioned. What else could this be? It is occasional during running.

Underneath the normal burner sound I hear almost a metal on metal "baseball card in the spokes" sound, at 3250 RPM.

I’m wondering what that is? The burner is 10 years old. I am considering a Beckett to replace it they’re more common and practical for the oil service company.

Oh, you're the guy from the other thread. If you need to replace the burner on a beautiful setup like a Buderus G115 with a Riello, then it's not the burner that needs to go, it's the service company. Are they aware it's not 1990 anymore?

There’s nothing in the fan. Could it be a dry bearing? The service company isn’t pushing a replacement I am considering it because I’d rather have a more run of the mill burner that anyone can service

The pumps on Riellos can be noisy especially run as a single pipe fuel system. A two pipe run to a Tigerloop always quieted them down for me. That might be an expense you'd rather avoid. I've alway been a big fan of those burners and have found that they rarely fail. If fact the only time I had to replace one was because after 40 years the control was obsolete if I recall correctly. Every service person should have the infrequently use parts in the van of readily handy. If that's not the case then you have to do what you have to do.
