Burner runs too often

I have a 1980 Repco boiler and I have noticed that the burner starts fairly often even when I’m not calling for heat. Also the pump runs nonstop. Any ideas.

Does this heater make both heat and domestic hot water?

Yes = that may be normaL
It used to but no longer = That may be normal but unnecessary.
NO = You have a wiring problem. There may be a crossed wire (What @109A_5 would call a short circuit) that is causing the thermostat to have a completed circuit that is intermittent. Can you post a picture of your Repco so we can see what controls your boiler has that make the burner operate? And maybe some close ups of the controls with the covers off, and wire connections to the circulator pump and gas valve.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Heater does not provide hot water, heat only.

If the boiler runs too often and the circulator is running where is the heat going? Either the burner and pump are running under the control of the thermostat, or they are not. That is the first place to look. Shut the power down and remove white and red from the thermostat. Put the power on and jump red and white burner should run disconnect them and it should stop. Also check the water pressure in the system. Low water pressure or air in the system can keep the boiler running for heat but you are not moving the heat from the boiler to the house.

If the zone valves are on automatic could they be closed and block the heat from circulating or would that create more problems. Sorry about all the questions but someone is wanting to charge me a lot of money to replace the aqua stat and pressure gauge.
