Banging -New Boiler

Hi I had new boiler installed 12/24/23 when it cycled that night no noise. A few days later banging shortly after the start of cycle. A few seconds of banging lots of whistling/hissing. Gas Fired Steam Boiler. Radiators heat on all levels across the entire radiator. Not sure how to do blow down or if thats what needed. Also had two add a little water twice now because low water cut off light was yellow. Some threads say adding water is normal other threads not so much. Looking for thoughts on the banging and hissing as well as manual adding of water. PennCo 1604HSID.

Did whoever installed ti skim it to get rid of the oil from the new boiler and piping? It would need to be skimmed when it was first installed and another time to couple of times a week or so after it is installed.

You can see the oil floating on the water in the sight glass.

Stand by for the steam pros. Can you get some pics from further back?
    Pics of main vents also.

How was that particular size boiler chosen? Anyone measure radiators?

Can't see from the pic but it looks like the Cut-in is too high on the pressuretrol. Get it below 1 psi and 1 on the differential dial inside the cover.
That's all I got... except possible hammer at the Hartford loop.

The steam risers and header for your 4 section boiler are supposed to be 2 1/2" pipe size. Using (1) 2 1/2" riser is ok per the boiler manual.

It looks like the riser is 2 1/2" with a 2 1/2 x 2" elbow on top and the header pipe should be 2 1/2" but looks to be 2".

The installer should come back and fix the piping. Why?

Because he did not pipe the boiler to the manufacturers MINIMUM standards as clearly shown in the boiler manual.

Also the boiler water needs to be skimmed/the boiler manual.

Also the safety valve needs to have a metal blow down pipe attached to it.

The wiring is messy and needs to be cleaned up and there doesn't appear to be a service switch for the boiler.

I'll cut them some slack because they installed it on 12/23 and you needed heat but they should come back and address those issues.

Piped the cheapest way possible extremely common why would any one do more when u get the same money for less and make more human nature and lack of reading and turning pages skill . Really dislike the reduction on the return inlet and a lack of a tee on the inlet as discribed and shown in piping diagram and the use of a single riser on that side outlet boiler only invites issues and wet steam production . I wish u well on getting them to repipe at what ever price you paided but it highly doubtfull they will any repipe maybe skim if there’s a tee on that single outlets other wise it will be that’s the way steam is , not ,a common phrase heard by those that install and pipe steam boiler incorrectly on the cheap and see no real reason to go the extra inch being most home owner will never open the manual and read and see for them self but manafactures don’t do any better w there mim pipe dimensions . A pro would ensure proper piping usually over the mim suggested by manufactures due to the knowledge that the system preforms better w dryer steam which only happen if piped correctly and let’s not forget washed ,wanded and skimmed till clean n mim surging if any .
It’s a shame that in 2024 installers still can’t read a manual says a lot for our school system and step jumpers being I think you should always read directions being no body knows it all and things change .
    Peace and good luck clammy

Ed - can you see size markings on the fittings? I’m staring at this trying to figure out if it might just be perspective. I’m kind of thinking it might be a 2-1/2 header with a 2-1/2 x 2 bushing in the tee to the main. If the OP could measure the circumference of the pipe with a string we would know for sure.

It's not even 2 weeks since the install, really should get the installer back in.. Please don't let him off the hook.. that's how he builds confidence to do this kind of a job for everyone else in the future.

Is the zip tie not enough?!

Looks like the riser out of the boiler is 2 1/2 stamped on the fitting but to me the header looks smaller.

That is why I said "LOOKS"

"It looks like the riser is 2 1/2" with a 2 1/2 x 2" elbow on top and the header pipe should be 2 1/2" but looks to be 2""
