One pipe system with two pipes?

Hello all, I have a steam system in my house which was built in 1925. the boiler was converted from coal to oil fired and the radiators all have two valves which are both on the bottom at each end and all the radiators have air vents half way up. could this system be a "one pipe" system which for some reason uses two pipes? and, if so, would it matter which way the radiator was connected?

It could very well be a 2 pipe air vent system, that was a thing. 1925 seems a bit late, but anything is possible.
A picture of one of the radiators would help to be 100% certain.
If it is 2 pipe air vent, one of the pipes should be one size smaller than the other. The smaller pipe would be the return and should be on the same end as the vent. So yes, it does matter.1 -
Both pipes are the same size. Iwill try to post pics later. Maybe I should put the vent on the opposite side from the pipe that heats up first when the boiler is running?0
