Correct control transformer for Weil McClain LGB6 Series 2

No heat due to kaput control transformer on my home's Weil McClain LGB-6 Series 2 steam boiler. The boiler's installing plumber in 1997 used a Honeywell with these markings on it: 9643, AT175C1004, 120V, 60 Hz, 0.8A, SEC 24 VAC 75VA and NEC. A plumbing supply house told me that I should only use the $180 Weil McClain Part No: 511-842-364 Control Transformer, 120/24 V, 75 VA Foot Mounted with Circuit Breaker. I'm curious whether this was really necessary versus another significantly less expensive Honeywell. Thanks!

As long as the VA rating (colt ampere) is the same pr greater you will be fine. The real question is what killed the old one, transformersd should last a very long time as lond as you dont draw to much current. A waem transformer is fine but a hot transformer is a red flag.

Philadelphia's electricity provider has a sidewalk vault transformer across the street from our home. It exploded Sept. 1st. It blew out windows on the home that fronted the vault, and it shook our home. We weren't operating the boiler at the time, but perhaps the explosion or the power resumption killed the boiler's control transformer? Anyway, what you're telling me is that it really wasn't necessary to buy the expensive Weil McLain transformer. Oh well.
