Firewall Blanket Replacement plus

Biketrax Member Posts: 6
I have an HB Smith series 8-4 2004. So I am replacing firewall blanket Kit 1156. also faulty so replacing expansion tank, pressure relief valve, ( leaking/faulty ) infeed valve/pressure regulator, changing oil filter and nozzle. This was due to a clogged black sooty chimney and chamber falling apart and also black and sooty. I just ordered a Residential Combustion Analyzer / CO tester by forensics coming soon.
So after I do all this is there anything I may be missing or overlooking? thanks for the help!

    Proper knowledge, skill and training

So I look at this and agree that you and I have much more experience than many on OilHeat. But I look back to the day that I got this: Knowledge, Skill, Training, (K,S,T) that may be missing here. It is certainly when I was 25 years old, but family business had me driving a delivery truck before I was let loose on customers to do Tune Ups in my own service truck without supervision. I'm sure there were a few (very few, perfection comes easy to me) that I got wrong, but the service manager would get called out on my Oops's and then go over the needed corrections. So, Might it be after several weeks of training, or several months of experience or more like several Years before someone could claim to posses K,S,T. Steve, When did you feel that you had the K, S, T you talk about?

As far as @Biketrax is concerned, When I was trained to do maintenance on oil burners, I had an experienced technician watch me set up the oil burner. If I got it right, he would let me know. If I got it wrong, there was a detailed explanation of my error and what was needed to set it up correctly by looking at the flame to get close, then using the instruments to fine tune the end result. There is nothing like having the experienced eye, next to you, looking at the same flame in real time.

YouTube can not compare to having the experience technician next to you looking at the same thing. Can I suggest that you get a Pro from your local fuel dealer and pay him to watch you set it up the first time to verify you are correct?

Just a rambling thought from an old man in a wheelchair

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

That's a very bold statement from someone who has absolutely no idea of what my KST is or whom I am working with! I dont feel like explaining my KST. I thought this was a place I could post and hopefully get a well educated helpful comment. If you read the post carefully I never asked for help in what I was performing, I asked for help in any other suggestions, while I was doing this work! I never mentioned that I may be doing it alone, without the aide of a retired professional.
Aside from a post from someone who needed to boast about how much his KST is above and beyond someone else. Please refrain from any further comments and dont bother inflating your head any more on my thread TY. I was just looking for Helpful additional information.
PS ED the heater man! Thank you for your response.
PSS Guys if you want to discuss KST. please start another thread instead of using my platform to have this discussion I would be most obliged

Not being able to see your system it is hard to recommend any other work. Maybe you could post a few pictures. Series 8 is a good boiler.

Saying "...I just ordered a Residential Combustion Analyzer / CO tester..." tells me your a novice and probably never used a combustion analyzer before. So you won't be able to interpret the results and/or even know what to do with those results. And without having and properly knowing how to use a smoke gun/tester & set your burner up for true zero smoke, your analyzer isn't going to do much for you.

Then saying "...So after I do all this is there anything I may be missing or overlooking?..." For one the pump strainer. Definitely tells me you never done this before.
And why all these parts at once?

You should provide more detail so people can provide more direction, or like me, figure out you're too green to tackle all of this alone.
Do you even know if you have the correct nozzle, pump pressure, and end cone combination? Are you confirming the z-dimension?

As 'bold' as you think my response was, it's because I am a professional who knows what they are doing and knows the possible/probable consequences of novices tackling all you trying to do.

But you'll probably come back on here with a dozen more questions.

So I stand by my statement, although I'll concur with @EdTheHeaterMan at the least you need someone there who knows what they are doing to watch over and advise (teach).

@Biketrax , I have to agree that you should hire a pro to set this up. Where are you located? We might know someone who can help.

There are many ways to give advice, or not. I’ve learned that kindness goes a long way. I’d much rather make friends than enemies.
