crane radiant baseboard panel supply valve...direction?

Which direction, right or left, is open for the Crane Radiant Baseboard Panel supply valve (the horizontal sweep valve lever, page 6 of the manual from 1952). I've got mine set in the middle, but haven't gotten a sense of left or right being opened or closed. Manual doesn't say. Looking at the valve behind the panel not really clear if right is tight.
