Missing packing nut.

Found one of my radiator leaks from the valve stem but only seems to happen in the morning when heat kicks in from being lower temp over night. Thought the day when hear kicks in periodically it does not leak. Decided to try repacking the nut when lo and behold there is no packing nut! Are packing nuts interchangeable or only work with the valve it came with? Any work around for this besides replacing the whole valve?

Replace the valve and the spud is normally how you'd do it. You'd need to find the nut for that valve and parts for that type of valve usually weren't distributed even when it was new.

That's what I was afraid was the case. Thanks for the answer.

You might be able to find a salvage or junk dealer that has old valves lying around. If so, they might have something that would fit.
